BIAL and L3 Macdonald Humfrey to launch smart security lane with ATRS

The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has teamed up with L3 Macdonald Humfrey (Automation) India to introduce the Smart Security Lane with Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS).

The firms have already concluded a trial run in 2017 at Kempegowda International Airport at Bengaluru, the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka. Once the new smart security lane system is commissioned, families can all be screened together, thereby reducing wait time and congestion at security checkpoints. As well as improving passenger experience, the technology will boost the airport’s efficiency.

BIAL COO Javed Malik was quoted by The Economic Times: “We can now process more passengers in a secure and controlled environment, improving overall operational efficiency and enhancing safety and security. In addition, passengers benefit from a quicker passage through security checkpoints.”

The airport noted that the new system will increase passenger screening capacity by more than 50%.
The smart lanes will automatically return empty trays to the preparation area for travellers to put their baggage and luggage in.

Due to automated rollers, trays will automatically move into the screening machines which will eliminate manual intervention by either passengers or staff to push trays/bags into the X-ray machines.
Trays will be able to accommodate maximum-size cabin baggage and come attached with a RFID tag, which will enable tracking from beginning to end.

BIAL said that the first automated lanes will be deployed at domestic and international checkpoints by the end of this year, while existing lanes will be gradually phased out.BIAL said that the first automated lanes will be deployed at domestic and international checkpoints by the end of this year, while existing lanes will be gradually phased outThe project is expected to finish by March next year.

L3 Macdonald Humfrey (Automation) India is the Indian unit of the UK-based tech developer of airport security and automation solutions.

In September, BIAL signed an agreement with IT firm Unisys to develop an Analytics Center of Excellence at Kempegowda International Airport in India.

BIAL recently signed a number of technology contracts, including LED Lights contract with ADB Safegate and a digital transformation contract with Siemens.
